The scene is grim, quiet and the atmosphere would be classic if filled with smoke. Behind the desk we have the aged, hulking figure head of the Yankee$, in the visitors chair we have the beaten and bowed skipper of the listing, perhaps sinking ship.
The skipper clears his throat, "Ah hem, well George, errr Mr Steinbrenner, sir; we've been together with this team for quite some time now. We've seen some good times and some not so good times. But now, these are the worst of times. I feel like I've been demoted to single A; and that you and Cashman are trying to give me a 44 going on 45 "fatigued" pitcher as the way to bootstrap my way out of the cellar. And what's even worse - this pitcher is the one telling me what's going on. "
"I've got another "marquee" player who's dicking around off the field and on the field. Now, Georg - errr, Mr. Streinbrenner, we both know that we have just deal with the dicking around off the field, but when it starts during the game - even I have to draw a line - that is if its okay with you?"
"I know you have to accept Roger's fatigue - well George, you're going to have to accept the fact that I'm fatigued. I'm just sick and tired of trying to deal with all the prima dona over paid punks you keep filling my line up with. So here it is, and by god, you're going to accept it today - my resignation - - I quit!"

LA Angels 4, NY Yankees 3
Ah yes, it does a small market diamond heart glad, although calling the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim a small market team is like calling a Winnebago a compact car. They went into NY city and swept the Yankees, 3-0. It does a heart good. But, really, there shouldn't be a suprise here. Would anyone be suprised if the Angels, in first place in the AL West, pulled off a sweep of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays? Of course not. Then no suprise at the sweep of the fourth place Yankees - whose record is only one more win than the fifth place Rays. The suprise here is that anyone would or could expect a different outcome.
What is sad, is that is may very well cost Joe Torre his job. I don't think that anyone feels it is his fault. The fault surely lies with the people selecting the players to spend George's seemingly bottomless treasury on. The Yankees are on pace to win only 71 games out of a 162 game season. Surely a poor return for the Yankees 200 million dollar plus payroll. Can even Roger Clemens, the legendary Rocket, salvage anything here? He may pull out a few more wins, but the Yankee landslide is moving pretty rapidly.

NY Yankee Roger Clemens - We Put the "Rocket" Under the Scope
I started this analysis of Roger Clemens pretty sure what it would tell me. Roger is over forty, he keeps coming out of retirement, his team isn't grabbing those world series rings any more - how good could he be?
If you look at the numbers in my charts and where Roger's teams have finished, you may think he is not pitching as effectively. You see that last year Roger had a won/lose record of seven and six, in nineteen starts - not ace stats it would appear. And superficially, that is the case.
When you look at the numbers more closely, you see that Roger's ERA remains very good. His WHIP stats have gone down over the past 6 years and are well below the league average of 1.37, and below is very good. His strike out to ball ratio is staying impressive. In 2006 Roger pitched for 113.1 innings and he racked up 102 strike outs while only allowing 29 bases on balls. Again, these aren't the numbers from a washed out or used up pitcher.
The 2006 won/lose record is explained by the run support (lack of run support describes it better) he received from the Houston Astros. And this (lack of) run support may be the missing key to explain his move from the Astros to the evil empire of the Yankees. With the Yankees, Roger is with his good buddy Andy Pettitte, and run support should not be the problem this year. Will his stint with the Yankees, put another World Series ring on Roger's fingers? Only the gods of the diamond know, and they aren't telling.
