Ah yes, it does a small market diamond heart glad, although calling the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim a small market team is like calling a Winnebago a compact car. They went into NY city and swept the Yankees, 3-0. It does a heart good. But, really, there shouldn't be a suprise here. Would anyone be suprised if the Angels, in first place in the AL West, pulled off a sweep of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays? Of course not. Then no suprise at the sweep of the fourth place Yankees - whose record is only one more win than the fifth place Rays. The suprise here is that anyone would or could expect a different outcome.
What is sad, is that is may very well cost Joe Torre his job. I don't think that anyone feels it is his fault. The fault surely lies with the people selecting the players to spend George's seemingly bottomless treasury on. The Yankees are on pace to win only 71 games out of a 162 game season. Surely a poor return for the Yankees 200 million dollar plus payroll. Can even Roger Clemens, the legendary Rocket, salvage anything here? He may pull out a few more wins, but the Yankee landslide is moving pretty rapidly.
